Change management

The Challenge:
A major global oil company needed to install an SAP computer system in their Light Oils division. Historically, such implementation efforts have been extremely difficult, in part because the switch to the SAP system typically requires a comprehensive overhaul of organizational procedures and a change in the computer interface that workers use. This can result in a demoralized workforce and serious disruption of information processing that can have profound negative effects on the organization's profitability. To help monitor the implementation of the new system and detect problems in time to manage change, the company decided to use the Concept System to construct a performance measurement system.

The Solution:

  • Concept mapping of performance objectives for Light Oils
  • Web-based ratings (using CSGlobal) on the importance of the performance objectives
  • Pattern matching to assess consensus and role relevance
  • Performance measurement (using CS Performer) to develop a set of measures that could be used to help manage the change

    The Results:

  • A detailed list of 132 performance objectives for the Light Oils division
  • A grouping of the performance objectives into ten performance areas. Five internal teams were assigned to develop metrics for specific performance areas.
  • Prioritization of the training areas showing that the most important are Billing, Hydrocarbons, and Data Interface & Conversion
  • A detailed set of performance metrics that are used on an ongoing basis to monitor performance as the SAP system is implemented. Each metric is linkd to an objective and performance area on the concept map. As data is collected over time, the company is able to summarize performance for each metric, each objective, each performance area, or for the project as a whole.
