Mary Kane, M.S.; President & CEO

Ms. Kane is the President of Concept Systems Incorporated. Ms. Kane has helped to standardize the CS methodology and process to ensure meaningful, measurable and useful outcomes for CSI's clients. Consulting experience includes strategic operational planning, product and program development, education and training design, and program needs identification. With Professor William Trochim, she is the author of several articles on the applications of Concept Mapping and Pattern Matching in organizational decision-making and strategic planning.

Ms. Kane has developed process and group consulting for federal, state and county agencies, health and mental health organizations, private corporations, not-for-profit agencies and school districts. She has facilitated with groups ranging from small boards of directors to organizations represented by thousands of stakeholders.

Ms. Kane joined CSI in 1994 after a successful career in the management and growth of community-based cultural and learning organizations.

Ms. Kane holds a Master's degree from Columbia University.


William M.K. Trochim, Ph.D.; Founding Partner

Dr. Trochim is the originator and developer of the Concept Mapping and Pattern Matching (CM/PM) model and programmed the Concept System® as a tool to help accomplish the process in a number of research fields including health, social policy, mental health, business, education, and human service administration.

Dr. Trochim is a full professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University, and is the Director of the Office for Management of Not-for-Profit Institutions (OMNI). He received a Ph.D. in Methodology and Evaluation Research from the Department of Psychology at Northwestern University and has been at Cornell University since 1980. He also currently holds an appointment as a Visiting Scientist with the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences of the National Cancer Institute, where he initiated and manages the Evaluation of Large Initiatives (ELI) project.

His research is broadly in the area of applied social research methodology, with an emphasis on program planning and evaluation methods. Among experimentalists, he is well known for his work in quasi-experimental alternatives to randomized experimental designs, especially the regression discontinuity and regression point displacement designs. In terms of research theory, he has extended the theory of validity through his articulation and investigation of the idea of pattern matching. In multivariate and applied contexts he is recognized for the development of the multivariate form of concept mapping that underlies the Concept System.

Dr. Trochim has written several books, including a widely used introductory research methods text, manages one of the most widely used websites in applied social research (www.socialresearchmethods.net), and has authored or co-authored many articles in professional journals including: Scientometrics, Encyclopedia of Biopharmaceutical Statistics, American Journal of Evaluation, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Performance Improvement, Medical Decision Making, Evaluation and Program Planning, Evaluation Review, Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, and many more.

He has been an active member of American Evaluation Association, and is the President of AEA for 2008. His research methods have been used in a number of government and not-for-profit contexts, especially most recently in health care, and includes as clients/partners, among others, such organizations as the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control, American Cancer Society, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.


Kathleen M. Quinlan, Ph.D.; Senior Consultant & Director of Research

As a Senior Consultant, Dr. Quinlan collaborates with clients to assess needs, design projects, conduct stakeholder-based research, and analyze, interpret and use findings. Dr. Quinlan has facilitated more than a dozen Concept Systems projects, including local, state, national and international projects. Recent projects have focused on evaluation of large-scale National Institutes of Health research initiatives, translation of health research to practice, and workforce development in public health.

As Director of Research, she provides leadership on research efforts that enrich, extend and disseminate CSIs methodology. Her numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations emphasize her interest in collaborative processes and their role in organizational learning.

Dr. Quinlan earned a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Stanford University and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Maine. Before coming to CSI, she held academic and leadership positions at the Australian National University and Cornell Universitys College of Veterinary Medicine.


Alayne MacArthur, M.S.; Senior Consultant

Ms. MacArthur is a health educator with experience in the following areas: designing and delivering public health education curriculum and professional development programs for adolescent and adult learners, facilitating strategic initiatives for the dissemination of evidence based public health programs, and designing, applying, and interpreting process and outcome evaluation tools and frameworks.

Ms. MacArthur earned her Masters degree in Education, Curriculum Design and Instructional Technology from the State University of New York, Albany, NY in 2003 and her Bachelor of Science from the State University of New York, Buffalo, NY in 2000.


Jodi Lee Denman, B.S.; Chief Operations Officer

Ms. Denman serves as the Chief Operations Officer at CSI. She is responsible for the efficient operation of CSI's office systems, finances, human resources, contract management, vendor/contractor relationships, and the company's strategic planning.

Ms. Denman has worked in finance and human resource management since 1989, in a variety of settings including CPA firms, small businesses and a publicly traded corporation. Her extensive experience includes financial project management, customer relations, staff and work team management, Access database implementation, financial forecasting and all aspects of accounting in small and larger organizations.

Ms. Denman lives in Ithaca with her two children Emma and Ainslie. She is membership director of a local community pool and serves on the committee. She is an avid Cornell hockey fan and enjoys traveling.

Ms. Denman is a graduate of Ithaca College, with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management.


Christopher Grant, M.S.; Senior Technology Consultant

With extensive experience in application design, development, deployment, and support, Mr. Grant serves as the Director of Technology at CSI. Mr. Grant is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office network, public and project website, and support of the Concept Systems applications. His experience as system administrator for a variety of corporate networks enables CSI to enhance its internal operations and expand its technology connections to its clients.

Mr. Grant has worked with large and small clients in New York City, Boston, MA, Portland, OR, and numerous cities in between. In the past 10 years, he has delivered integrated e-commerce systems, dozens of corporate websites, and robust user-friendly applications on several different technology platforms. Having earned an M.S. degree in Computer Science from New York University, and a B.S. degree in Computer Science from Cornell University, Chris has now settled just outside Ithaca, NY, at a lovely small farm with his wife, Kimberley.


Katy Hall, B.A.; Client Services Consultant

As Client Services Consultant, Katy Hall works closely with clients and CSI staff on planning, design, facilitation, and management of stakeholder based research and curriculum design projects. She manages the organizations Concept Systems Research Association (CSRA) which links individuals and organizations with research interests in concept mapping. Ms. Hall also manages CSIs training development program, including regular on-site certification training in the Concept System and Concept System Global applications, users conferences, special events, and workshops.

Ms. Hall has worked in administration and communications for the Yale University Library and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She is a graduate of Elmira College, where she received a B.A. in Secondary Education and History.


Brenda K. Pepe, B.A.; Client Services Consultant

Ms. Pepe works closely with CSI Senior Consultants and clients on the planning, design and completion of consulting projects. She tracks and manages integrated activities on large multi-stream, multi-phase projects. Brenda also manages CS Global Sales and Development initiatives, which includes management for CS Global Research Services.

Ms. Pepe has provided technical, administrative, contract and sales support and management in a variety of work settings. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology from City University of New York and has completed 30 credits toward a Masters of Public Administration degree.

Ms. Pepe serves on the Board of Directors at the Drop In Childrens Center in Ithaca and lives in the Ithaca area with her husband David and their son Luca.


Gruschenka Mojica, B.A.; Client Services Associate

Ms. Mojica serves as our Client Services Associate. She works closely with CSI Consultants in the facilitation, management, and analysis of evaluative data for state and federal research and Concept Mapping projects. As a native Spanish speaker, Gruschenka also works with Client Services Consultants to provide support for international clients and project participants.

Prior to joining Concept Systems, Gruschenka attended Cornell University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, Latin American Literature, and a pre-medical curriculum. She will begin a Masters in Public Administration at the Cornell Institute for Public Administration in 2008 while working at CSI. Gruschenka currently volunteers at the Ithaca Free Clinic as a Health Insurance Advisor, screening uninsured individuals for state health insurance eligibility. She also enjoys practicing equestrian show jumping with her two horses in Ithaca, and competes as member of the Puerto Rico Equestrian Team during the springs and summers in the Northeast and Canada.


Noelia L. Springston, B.A.; Operations Associate

Noelia serves as the Operations Associate at CSI, providing direct support to the CEO and COO while also assisting the Client Services staff with client communications, project deliverables and software product licensing. Ms. Springston is responsible for conference management and supporting the daily operations of the CSI offices.

Previous to joining CSI, Noelia worked in administrative capacities in non-profit and research environments. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the foothills of Panama, supporting countrywide initiatives in rural sustainable agriculture. Ms. Springston received her Bachelors degree in English and Plant Biology from the University of New Hampshire. She gardens outside Ithaca with her husband Tim and their two English Shepherds, Peggy and Shep.


Lisa Schappert; MNM

Ms. Schappert works closely with the Client Services staff managing client inquiries and the client database, as well as assisting with project management and license and training sales support. She also works in a supportive role providing assistance to maintain the general operations of the office.

Prior to joining the CSI team, Ms. Schappert worked in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. She has several years of administrative and research experience working in finance, healthcare and mental health agencies. She received her Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Oswego and a Masters degree in Nonprofit Management from Regis University in Denver, Colorado. She lives in Endicott, NY with her husband Rich.


Diana Crawford, Assistant Administrator

Ms. Crawford's duties include maintenance of the Concept Systems' client database and invoicing system, arranging CSI's on-site Training Seminars, and also keeping track of office needs. She has organizational and secretarial experience in publishing, and medical and educational offices.
